What is WiFi 6E?

WiFi 6E is the latest and best WiFi standard. It uses an extended frequency range which enables faster speeds (up to 10.8Gbps), lower latency and up to four times as many devices to be connected without network congestion.

It provides more reliable connectivity in high-density environments, such as large public gatherings and crowded office buildings, where multiple devices are competing for network access.

It will become the technology for new or upgraded wireless networks but it’s not universally available yet. You can buy it now but prices are high and choice is limited.

To operate as WiFi 6E, the wireless access points (APs), or wireless router, and the devices connecting to them will need to be WiFi 6E. It’s fully backward compatible with WiFi 4, 5 and 6.

The 6GHz frequency range is now available for WiFi, and it’s this that has led to the improvements in performance for WiFi 6E. Previous WiFi standards used the 2.4GHz and 5GHz ranges.

A drawback of WiFi 6E is that is that the 6GHz waves won’t transmit as far so more APs may be required. However, if a 6GHz link can’t be established, the devices will attempt to connect with a 5Ghz WiFi 6 link. Mesh WiFi networks could be built with WiFi 6 between the APs and WiFi 6E from the APs to the devices.

In summary, WiFi 6E represents a significant enhancement to WiFi 6 technology, providing faster speeds, lower latency, improved performance, and more reliable connectivity in high-density environments.
