Could everyday devices be turned against your business?

by | Oct 21, 2026 | Article, Cyber

A recent cyber attack on hundreds of French supermarkets has highlighted the damage criminals can cause through connected equipment. Attackers took control of refrigeration systems, causing some fridges and freezers to reach 50°C. Retailers were forced to discard fresh and frozen food, with losses estimated in the millions of euros.

Your organisation may have no frozen produce to protect but consider the equipment you rely on every day. CCTV cameras, door access systems and office printers can all be connected to your network. If poorly secured, these devices could expose sensitive information, disrupt operations or provide a route into other systems.

Take a look around your workplace and ask yourself: if someone took control of this device, what could they do to our business?

Could you still operate if your access control system stopped working? What information passes through your office printer? Who is responsible for keeping these devices secure?

We encourage organisations to consider every connected device as part of their attack surface: the systems and access points that criminals could potentially exploit. Equipment that seems routine or harmless can still create a significant weakness if its security is overlooked.

Our Lynx Grid Cyber Security Review helps you identify gaps across your network, connected devices and wider security practices. Our experts assess your existing defences and provide clear, prioritised recommendations to help you address weaknesses and reduce your exposure to cyber threats.
